Airbus shares fell as much as 6 per cent amid reports the US authorities are investigating alleged corruption at the European aerospace and defence company.
French newspaper Le Monde reported that the US Department of Justice had told Airbus about the probe in the summer.
The Serious Fraud Office is already investigating allegations of fraud, bribery and corruption in Airbus’s civil aviation group, while French authorities are looking into the use of agents to win contracts.
Airbus could face fines of several billions euros, Le Monde reported.
In a tweet Airbus chief executive Tom Enders said: ‘I’m not surprised to see some more sniping out of Paris. Some people over there just don’t get it. Otherwise nothing new, investigation ongoing.’
The Department of Justice declined to comment.
